What to Wear to a Run Club (An Honest Answer)

If you've googled this question, you've probably seen a lot of articles recommending specific shoes, moisture-wicking fabrics, hydration vests, and running belts. Some of them have affiliate links. Most of them are written by people who want to sell you something.

This one isn't that.

Here's the honest answer from a run club that meets multiple times a week in Escondido and North County San Diego, where it's sunny and warm most of the year and the dress code is whatever you have.

The only thing that actually matters

Shoes you can run in. That's it. That's the list.

They don't have to be the right brand. They don't have to be new. They don't have to be specifically designed for running. They just need to be shoes you can move in without hurting yourself. If you've been running in them before, they'll work fine.

I know I started off in a pair of New Balances that I bought at Big 5… were they the best? No! But it got me moving. A lot of us will say buy an expensive pair of shoes so it’s motivation to use them.. but that doesn’t always need to be the case.

Everything else…. the technical fabric, the $180 shoes, the running belt, the GPS watch.. are optional. It might make running more comfortable over time. But it is not a requirement for showing up to your first run club, and nobody there is going to notice or care what you're wearing.

What people actually wear to NCRC

We've had people show up in basketball shorts. Old college t-shirts. Leggings from Target. Fancy gear from running stores. The same outfit three weeks in a row.

Nobody has ever been turned away or made to feel out of place because of what they were wearing.

What we do see a lot of, especially in North County where it stays warm well into fall, is pretty simple. Shorts or leggings. A t-shirt or tank. Running shoes or sneakers. Sunglasses when it's sunny, which is most of the time. A hat if you run hot.

That's genuinely all you need.

A few practical things worth knowing for North County

Since we run in and around Escondido, here are a few real considerations based on where we actually run and when.

It gets warm. Even on morning runs, inland North County can push into the 70s and 80s by mid-morning in summer. Light layers and something breathable will serve you better than a heavy cotton shirt. But again, wear what you have and adjust from there.

Sun is real. Sunscreen, a hat, or sunglasses are genuinely useful here. Not because of any aesthetic reason, just because the sun is out and you'll be outside in it.

The trails get dusty. If you come to a trail run at Daley Ranch or Escondido Creek Trail, closed-toe shoes are the move. Sandals won't work. Everything else is fine.

Nobody cares about your pace or your watch. You don't need a GPS watch or a running app to join us. If you have one and you like it, great. If you don't, nobody will notice.

What about the NCRC stuff you see on Instagram?

Fair question.

We make merch because we like it and because it helps people feel connected to the club. The hats and tees are things we're genuinely proud of and wear ourselves.

But you absolutely do not need to own any of it to come run with us. Wearing the club shirt doesn't make you more welcome. Showing up does.

If you end up liking the club and wanting something to wear, the store is at nobodycaresrunclub.com/store. Our drops are limited and we don't restock once they close, so keep an eye on Instagram if you want to catch the next one.

The real answer to this question

The thing about "what should I wear to a run club" is that it's often not really about clothes. It's about not wanting to look wrong or stand out or give anyone a reason to notice you for the wrong reasons.

We get that. Showing up somewhere new, not knowing anyone, not knowing the culture… it's a lot. The clothes question is really a belonging question in disguise.

So here's the actual answer: you already belong. You just haven't shown up yet.

Wear whatever you run in. Come find us. We'll take it from there.
